"The Many Faces of Honor: Exploring the Biblical Concept of Honor"? By Lora D. Charles

Honor is a powerful and multifaceted concept that is woven throughout the Bible. It is a reflection of the reverence and respect that believers are called to show towards God and towards others. The Bible contains numerous references to different aspects of honor, each of which carries its own unique significance and implications. One of the most fundamental aspects of honor in the Bible is the call to honor God. This involves recognizing and acknowledging God's sovereignty, authority, and goodness, and responding with heartfelt worship, obedience, and gratitude. Psalm 29:2 declares, "Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." Honoring God also involves living a life that is pleasing to Him, following His commandments, and seeking His will above our own.

Another aspect of honor in the Bible is the call to honor parents. This commandment, found in Exodus 20:12, is one of the Ten Commandments and is repeated in the New Testament as well. Honoring parents involves showing them respect, gratitude, and obedience, as they are the ones who have brought us into the world and raised us. Ephesians 6:2-3 says, "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth." The Bible also instructs us to honor those in positions of authority, such as government officials and church leaders. Romans 13:1 states, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." Similarly, 1 Peter 2:17 calls on believers to "Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king." This call to honor leaders reflects the importance of respecting and submitting to those who have been placed in positions of responsibility over us, whether in the government, the church, or other areas of society. Another aspect of honor in the Bible is the call to honor one another. This involves showing respect, kindness, and love to our fellow believers, treating them as we would like to be treated ourselves. Romans 12:10 says, "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another." Philippians 2:3 similarly exhorts believers to "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." Honoring one another also involves seeking to build up and encourage one another, rather than tearing each other down. The Bible also calls on believers to honor widows and orphans, as well as the poor and disadvantaged. This reflects God's heart for the vulnerable and marginalized in society, and His desire for His people to show compassion and generosity towards those in need. James 1:27 says, "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." Similarly, Proverbs 14:31 states, "He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy on the needy." Honoring the truth and righteousness is another important aspect of honor in the Bible. This involves upholding and defending the truth, even in the face of opposition or persecution, and living a life that is characterized by righteousness and integrity. Psalm 15:1-2 asks, "Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart." Similarly, Proverbs 20:7 states, "The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him."

Honoring marriage and sexual purity is another important aspect of honor in the Bible. This involves recognizing the sanctity of marriage and the importance of maintaining sexual purity within it. Hebrews 13:4 says, "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge." Similarly, 1 Corinthians 6:18 warns, "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body." Honoring our word and promises is also an important aspect of honor in the Bible. This involves being true to our word, keeping our promises, and fulfilling our commitments. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 warns, "When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; for He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed - better not to vow than to vow and not pay." Similarly, James 5:12 exhorts believers to "But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No,' lest you fall into judgment." These are just a few examples of the various aspects of honor mentioned in the Bible. Ultimately, the concept of honor reflects the reverence and respect that believers are called to show towards God and towards others, and is woven throughout the entire Bible. By striving to live lives that are characterized by honor, we can bring glory to God and reflect His character and love to those around us.
